His pantheism inspired him to a solid conviction that everything a true artist made was an utterance of the divine. In practice, this often meant that he had to rely on self-publishing to bring out his works. <em>Fifty Joys<\/em>, for example, was first published in 1966 in the <em>Domburgse Cahiers<\/em>, a zine written and stencilled by Van Schagen himself and then mailed to subscribers all over the Netherlands. Nadorst Publishing has excavated this remarkable text and offers a first bilingual edition, in the original Dutch and an English translation.
