Fifty Joys
Sixty year after its original publication, Nadorst Publishing is honored to present the first bilingual edition of Fifty Joys, a small literary jewel in which Dutch artist and author J.C. van Schagen recorded what things ‘sparked joy’ for him in life.
Van Schagen (1891-1985) was an eccentric character on the margins of Dutch literature. His pantheism inspired him to a solid conviction that everything a true artist made was an utterance of the divine. In practice, this often meant that he had to rely on self-publishing to bring out his works. Fifty Joys, for example, was first published in 1966 in the Domburgse Cahiers, a zine written and stencilled by Van Schagen himself and then mailed to subscribers all over the Netherlands. Nadorst Publishing has excavated this remarkable text and offers a first bilingual edition, in the original Dutch and an English translation. The publication has a singular, fan-like design: fifty copies are available for the public.
